A Collapsed World

I sit, leaning on the wall, eyes closed, I try opening them but the eyelids feel soo heavy, my head, oh my head, sharp pain in the left temple of my skull, a heavy sigh, exhausted, whimpering with each breath I take, my body shaking and shivering, I try to open my eyes one more time, exhausted, hurt and starving, I grind my teeth in pain as I try to gather courage one more time, to get up, get away from this place. I take a deep breath, feeling a sharp pain in my abdomen. I put my hand where I felt the pain, I clutch my stomach, ugh! The pain is excruciating, and my shirt is covered with something sticky. I can hardly open my eyes. My vision is blurred. I snuffle and wheeze as I try to breathe, vision still blurry, my head feeling light like I'm about to collapse, engulfed in the darkness with very little light, I look at my hand. My hand is painted with a dark shade of red, I whimper, it is blood, my blood. By the look of it, I have lost a lot of blood and now I'm losing daylight too, I need to hurry but I can hardly stand on my own.

I tried standing using the wall as a crutch. I could feel the drops of rain sliding on my face. I staggered nausea washing over me, my head felt dizzy. A concussion I guessed from when my head was hit earlier as I tried to escape. I collapsed several times as I tried to stand. Finally, clutching my stomach tight I stood as the blood oozed out of the cut on my stomach. I ran, I tried to, I didn't know where I was running to, I didn't know who I was running from anymore, with each step the ground swayed under my feet, I couldn't think clearly. All I knew was I needed to get somewhere safe. I twisted and turned in the labyrinth of streets. Everything was a blur.

The world is crippled and fighting to survive. All the countries are still affected by poisonous gas. We thought we could win the 2062 war. After all, the country we bombed was so far, but unlike humans, this lab-made gas does not discriminate. It possessed the fresh air, haunted and hunted us down. Skins melted, screams were loud. We ran to our basements as fast as we could when we heard the sirens go out, we closed our ears and eyes, sat tight, with limited supplies. Crops withered, the land turned barren, birds fell from the sky like it was raining, animals perished and so did human beings. Well, most of us did. Days went by, as did weeks and months.

I saw people die of hunger and starvation. I have seen people kill each other for food. I have seen people eat corpses, didn't matter whose bodies they were. Houses collapsed, trees crumbled and quilted, the green grass that once flourished has ceased to exist. They say we are the few lucky ones who survived, the lucky few who will take forward the human race, but I don't feel lucky in any way. It's a dog eat dog world now. Something that was taboo is a way of the world now. The only thing you need to remember now is, 'you either eat or get eaten.
